Kontos Cellars, Walla Walla, Washington

The Jaunt

We took the long way. Up over Steven’s pass; Leavenworth; Hiking and Coulees, more Hiking and Waterfalls, more Hiking, and Trail Running. My glass is filled in many ways, wine is just one of them. The journey should be beautiful.

Quench Your Thirst

Walla Walla Washington is the heart of wine country in Washington. There are so many great wineries to experience. We were only there for one full day which also happened to be a Monday. This was not good planning on our part but sometimes you can’t choose where you land on certain legs of a trip. If you are asking why it matters that we were there on a Monday, well, a large number of wineries are not open on Mondays. We were sticking to a walking distance within the downtown area which also limited the number of choices. We were not worried, we knew there are so many great choices that surely one would be open. We enter Kontos Cellars.

It was a typical cool spring day in Eastern Washington, which means the weather changes on a dime. We were the only ones in the outdoor seating area. It was so lovely, with a few garden plants and away from the main street. The heaters were warm and so was the service. We were lucky enough to be undercover when a little squall moved through.

Kontos is family-owned and run. The family history in Walla Walla goes back six generations and the connection they have to the area is strong. Certainly, a few good stories could be told. My favorite part of the venue was the swings on the porch and located throughout the 2 story tasting room.

But the wine! The wine was smooth and had a soft finish. The Merlot reminded me of Katy Perry, fruit-forward, soft tannins, low acidity, and the candy cherry finish was to die for. The Syrah was mild and had a green floral aroma. It was tart on the tongue and somehow reminded me of riding a bike in the summer.

But the wine that really got my attention was the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon. The blackberry and raspberry aromas were met with a hint of pepper. It was complex, sweet, but savory. The finish is what took me by surprise, just a brush of butterscotch across my tongue like a secret exchange between possible lovers. It was just enough to heighten your yearning for just one more taste.

Kontos Cellars was definitely a good choice for a Monday afternoon interlude.

A Juicy Morsel

Laying on the bed, undressed legs folded to one side and arms open wide. The music pulses through my soul, dancing through my blood and spilling out of the end of my limbs. I must move I must dance, I extend my leg flexing the muscles, moving gracefully in a sweeping arch in the air until I am open. I’m lush. Folding it back down next to the other. My chest rises, my back arches, the beat of the music pulls me. Waiting for him to join me.

We will definitely be back to Walla Walla to experience more of the wonderful wines that the area has to offer. Until next time, keep your glass full.
